When John Beaver searched online for the keywords "spices" and "Oakland" he found restaurants that worn spices. He found recipes that used spices. There was even a movie, "The Mistress of Spices," about a look for owner trained in the art of healing with spices. The story was set and filmed in Oakland. But a spice blow the whistle on buy here existed only in fantasy, Beaver said.

So he and his fiancée, Erica Perez, made the illusion a reality. They opened the Oaktown Spice Shop on Dec. 17 in what had been a haberdashery with a conception of Lake Merritt.

Now shoppers are lured inside by the aroma of cumin, vanilla, pepper, chilies and nutmeg, which is still part of Coca-Cola's esoteric formula.

"I heard about this place. It's new," a woman passing by with a stroller exclaimed, staring into the window at burlap sacs, select scales and neatly lined jars on the walls.

Maps sign the path of spices like cardamom pods from Guatemala, ginger from China, turmeric, dill and nigella seeds from India. The coriander traveled from Canada, tarragon and lavender from France, and thyme from Morocco. Legitimate Ceylon cinnamon arrived from Sri Lanka.

Quesadilla Casserole

Begetter: McCormick (8 servings)

2 teaspoons chili puissance

6 8-inch flour tortillas

2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
