FARGO, N.D. - Tricky supplies were the order of the day for many
varieties of dry edible beans in 2011, and it looks like the
ball game will remain much the same in 2012, according to John
Thompson, dry bean sales supervisor for Thompson USA, Ltd.
Thompson spoke at the Northarvest Bean Day held in Fargo on Jan.
20.
According to USDA figures from the Subject Agricultural
Statistics Service, total dry edible bean work in the United
States was off 38 percent in 2011, dropping from 31.8 million
hundredweight (cwt.) in 2010 to 19.73 million cwt. this old times
year.
USDA figures from 2011 indicated dry bean opus was lower
in 17 of the 18 top producing states in the nation. The top five
producing states (North Dakota, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska and
Idaho) all qualified a drop in production from 2010.
The drop in North Dakota was even more dramatic, current from a
11.5 million cwt. crop in 2010 to 4.9 million cwt. in 2011, a 58
percent go. This represented the lowest dry bean production
for North Dakota since 1971.
